What is Shaft Tipping?

Shaft tipping, also known as tip trimming, means cutting off part of the shaft’s tip section – the end of the shaft that fits into the clubhead. The aim is usually to make the shaft stiffer, more stable and more controlled through impact. Unlike simply cutting the shaft at the butt end, where the grip sits, tipping changes how the shaft actually plays. More tipping gives a firmer feel in the tip section and can help produce a lower launch, less spin and a more penetrating ball flight.

How does Shaft Tipping affect flex and spin?

Tipping a shaft changes its playing profile by stiffening the tip section. As a general rule, we count 0.5" of tipping as roughly half a flex stiffer, and 1" of tipping as roughly a full flex stiffer. In other words, a Regular shaft tipped 0.5" may feel like a Regular+, while a Regular shaft tipped 1" can feel closer to a Stiff. It is also worth knowing that tipping reduces spin – tipping a shaft 0.5" lowers spin by around 250–500 rpm.

When is Shaft Tipping a good choice?

Shaft tipping can be a great option if you like a particular shaft model but want it to feel stiffer and more stable. It can also make sense if the club feels too active in the tip section, if your ball flight is too high, or if you are looking for a lower, more controlled trajectory.

0.5" Tipped
Approx. 0.5 flex stiffer
250–500 rpm less spin

The shaft gets a firmer feel in the tip section.

Example:

Regular → Regular+

Stiff → Stiff+

X-Stiff → X-Stiff+

1.0" Tipped
Approx. 1 flex stiffer
500–1000 rpm less spin

The shaft feels noticeably stiffer and more stable.

Example:

Regular → Stiff

Stiff → X-Stiff

X-Stiff → TX

Tip trimming affects the shaft’s feel, stability and flex profile. The effect may vary depending on shaft model, profile, clubhead and manufacturer. It does not, however, affect the shaft length you order.

Our recommendation on tip trimming

Tipping should always be done with care, as it cannot be undone. Too much tipping can make the shaft overly stiff, reduce feel and have a negative effect on its profile. The right amount of tipping should be chosen based on shaft model, clubhead, swing speed, tempo and desired ball flight. With the right adjustment, we can unlock more performance!
